OPEN DAY AT THE KEMÉNY CASTLE IN MAROSVÉCS

On the 30th of September 2014, the Neuropsychiatric Institute of Rehabilitation from Brancovenesti/Marosvécs handed back the castle to the heirs of the Kemény family.
History:
First written signs about the csatle are dated from 1228 and it is known that the original building was built at the site of a roman castrum.
The castle was given by II. György Rákóczi in 1648 to János Kemény, later Princip of Transylvania. From that time it was owned by the Kemény family for three hundred years.
After 1923, baron János Kemény (1903-1971) inherited the estate and its intension was to use the marosvécs heritage upon the purpose of the Transylvanian culture and society. In this spirit took place in 1926 the first meeting of the Erdélyi Helikon group composed of the most important representatives of the Transylvanian literature. For almost two decades, until 1944, were held every summer these meetings participating 55 writers during the years. Meeting each year brought something new: book publishing, public libraries, literature evenings, social help and partnership with romanian and saxon writers.
After 1945 the castle was confiscated from the Kemény family for almost 60 years, until the 30th of September 2014. During this period the Romanian state used the castle as a correctional facility and later for psychiatry.
Future:
After the restitution of the castle the Kemény family intends to devote the building and the family heritage for the overall hungarian interest, cultural and social purpose and a resource for the reconsiliation between Transylvanian nationalities.

The inner courtyard of the castle:

- Bishop László Tőkés shares the thanksgiving praye
- Csaba Böjte the franciscan monk, head of the Dévai Szent Ferenc Alapítvány sanctifies the returned castle
- speech of Hunor Kelemen resigned Minister of Culture of Romania
- Zoltán Kemény makes a toast
- Vécsi Zoltán Nagy presents a brief history of the castle
After it, the visit of the castle in its original recovered state.
Cultural programs are awaiting all the guests.

Entertainers: Előd Szabó, Robert Brai, Erzsébet Fülöp, Ilka Kilyén és József Kozsik and Ádám Tamás (9 years old) playing the violin with piano accompaniment.
